No wonder there are never enough priests, Its annoying to even try to play one. How about a spell you can actually level with in the beginning.

Between exploration and spell mastery, there is really no need for a cleric tier class to enter combat mode until journeyman.

I just hope you aren't giving the poor chap a pole-mace. Anyone who advocates the pole-mace method should be prevented from helping newbies.

Besides, the game is either complete boredom or a MUSH before level 40 anyway.

Pole-mace is useful for the fact that you can cast without modifier when you're engaged in combat.

If you're fighting a NPC in a room full of non-aggressive similars, you can unwittingly spark an unwanted combat by spamming c 'flame' human.

I agree, I have leveled many a priests. Pole-maces are most important (or make a dwarf which is SUPER easy to level as a priest via axes being mastered they are not the best priests however) when it comes to leveling a priest, undead are useful but sleeping at those lower levels is really almost as bad as getting 1 hit a round with low str. BUT str mods are important as well. Priests are very slow at first, but their end game is quite worth it. RP and general usefulness make it all the worthwhile, once you get spear of faith and flamestrike you will be in the upper levels in no time, patience is important. There is probably always a way to PLVL, but so many hours of grind is almost what makes a character special in the end, you have to work for it! Just watch something while you play in those lower levels, you will enjoy the outcome!

Undead are totally awesome for leveling.

Pole-maces are TERRIBLE because they just miss all the time. Get a normal old steel staff enchanted, it'll save you so much time. Yeah, I said staff. Go in the front row, nothing does any damage before level 15-20 anyway and besides, you have a healing spell. There's also an excellent place for lower levels with NPCs that take extra damage from blunt, so.... yeah. Anyone who isn't a lightie should be leveling there, and lighties should be murdering undead with cure light and getting so much XP it's obscene. Cure light a NPC to death, sleep until the tick passes, lather rinse repeat. That will give you almost twice as much experience for time spent than casting spells until you go out of mana and then sleeping until you get to 100% mana again. Besides, it's good practice for enchanting later. After you get flamestrike, ask around for where to find grouped NPCs near your level (or explore around via the areas command), and after you get spear of faith, just laugh your way to GM.

That's a priest with distant charisma that I pushed past Master 4 including induction RP in less than 50 hours, and the rest of the time I've spent playing him was because he's A) a fun alt and B) to powerlevel an elf warlock to GM in 13 hours, taking the record for leveling to GM by a landslide, and C) enchanting an entire suit of armor/jewelry to reasonably high quality armor.

It's not so bad to level priests, it's just different! You can do it!
