Front row is NOT an option for a cloth priest.

So maybe, wait to take a cloth faith until you reach a comfortable level.

You don't need a religion till journeyman/veteran. Stay without a religion, get some brass armor, and level till then.

Also, rofl at being Age: 160 and master on a gnome priest with 85 hrs, telling people it dont take long.

I pointed out that I got to that level (Which is higher than master 4 by the way, it's just that I didn't advance so that I could get more cheese out of the familiarity system when helping others level) way before 85 hours: That time also includes enchanting an entire kit from items that start with nothing, mastering a bunch of essential spells for power-leveling others efficiently (Like gate, heal, refresh, sanctuary), and actually power-leveling another character all the way to GM. Not to mention induction RP, all with naturally distant charisma.

Up until the point where you get flamestrike, it's perfectly viable to level a cloth priest in the front row. Just cast armor, beat on stuff with a staff, and sleep in between each fight. Toss in a couple cure lights if you need.

I leveled a -naked- priest that way. Putting on cloth armor doesn't make it worse. The NPCs in the areas you level in up until you get flamestrike, except the undead NPCs (Which you should level on with a pet in front) just don't do jack for damage unless you're wielding a weapon like a pole-mace which misses 75% of the time. And once you -do- get access to spell damage it's more efficient to kill NPCs with spells and sleep on the ticks just because you get double xp for casting. Besides, you end up mastering flamestrike which is much more useful than mastering staff.

There used to be a time where the NPCs in the lower level areas like the outpost actually did some damage worth mentioning and it was possible to die to them, but they've been nerfed.

You gain xp from damaging monsters. You want to damage monsters. Priests have access to a slew of buffs that make it easier to damage monsters.

They only get one attack. You don't want it to miss. You want it to hit and do as much damage as it possibly can.

If your pet is doing damage, you aren't. You are not getting that xp. If you pet gets 8 attacks in the four rounds it takes for you to land 2 hits with your pole-mace, you are wasting about as much time as you would healing a melee player for xp.

I had to power level a priest to journeyman recently. It was easy by making every choice possible to play towards dealing sustainable damage. Even the newbie Ayamaoan gear deflects most low-level strikes until journeyman, that's without enchantments. Add a weapon type, material, and damage type chosen to take advantage of the racial properties of your enemies, and it is smooth sailing. Casting frenzy on top, or even mood aggressive, is incredibly more efficient than buying a lion and using a pole-mace. Why? Because you do more sustainable damage faster. And that is the mechanic for combat-based xp in this game.

Read the help files carefully and you will find they agree with this conclusion. Use the help files, the area command, the compare and consider commands, and common IC knowledge to take advantage of these things. Don't wait around for some veteran to tell you how to do something; you have no way of knowing whether or not their advice is worth your time in even listening to.

I only know of one area with undead and even that is hard for me playing a griffon priest to even get to because of the NPCs that attack then follow you. So, it sucks. I've just been finding places to kill things where I can until then, really. Playing a Healer is a bit difficult, because you kinda..have to not attack anything that doesn't really warrant it, I'd say the same for other good religions. (Unless people...don't use the "roleplay hunting" mode which is where you actually only hunt what your roleplay determines? Or do most people eschew that for simple power-leveling? Cause, I'd not like Mira to pop out and be like, *zap Dairune* "You have shed the blood of innocents, your life is forfeit." kinda thing...)

Psst. You're Meissan. :P

Ask IC, there is plenty to hunt without breaking alignment. :)
