I use putty exclusively and have not had any problems with it. But keep in mind it's not designed for playing games, it's designed for connecting to remote machines (which is what you do when playing a MUD). It does not have the feature that lets you delimit commands with a semicolon.

As for the encryption problem, I'm not at home right now so I don't have a putty window I can look at to tell you which settings. But make sure you are not using SSH - use the telnet port setting.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind with Putty. It is my favorite telnet client to use aside from Zmud, for its simplicity. It will fit on a 3.5" floppy.

There is one important setting to change if you use it. It is located under the connections tab, and the sub-heading telnet. There is a selection between active and passive connection for telnet. I would select passive. That made it connect for me. That was the only thing I HAD to do to connect. Of course, I made the scrollback much larger, adjusted some colors, window size, and several other settings which make it all that much easier to use.

This is what I would do:

Download the client (I use puttytel, smallest and simplest, can be found by searching for puttytel on Google)

Double click on the program (no install necessary, might not work with all OS)

Change all the necessary settings (Including adding the host and port for SK: shatteredkingdoms.org 1996)

Goto the session heading, write Shattered Kingdoms into the session

    Click Save

Double click the saved Shattered Kingdoms session

It should connect to the login for SK

That is how I play away from my own computers. Nice and neat. All I need is a internet connection.

For those of you that hadn't noticed, I'm back in using SimpleMu. I'm seeing both advantages and disadvantages compared to ZMUD. For one thing, I prefer SimpleMu's default color selections. It is easier to differentiate between your actions and your opponents during battle. One problem though is that it prompts for data entry before displaying the screen prompt. Since I already know what I'm being prompted for, I didn't have a real problem with it. However, it would be a big deal for anyone new to SK. There is probably a setting that can be tweaked to fix this, but I'd been away from SK too long already, didn't want to bother taking the time to figure it out.

If anyone has some helpful hints for SimpleMu, I'm willing to listen. Should have plenty of time this weekend for tweaking.
