Okay, I've been playing for a while now, but never really got to the point where any of my characters drowned.
I dunno whether it's instantaneous, or if you get messages...

Would someone care to enlighten me?

You actually drown REALLY quickly. You'll fall unconscious in under 30 seconds and definitely be dead in under a minute. I think it's more like 15 and 30, but at any rate if you're not dead in a minute something funky is going on.

Messages are:
"you start holding your breath"

"YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF AIR"

"You fall unconscious from lack of air"

"You have been killed!"

I think he was talking more about drowning while swimming on the surface, not underwater. IE - loss of PE due to swimming and getting stuck in the middle of the ocean.

From what I've seen (I've never actually drowned before) Adder is correct. If your question relates to what Baraka mentioned, you willl never drown do to a loss of PE (This I have actually done, and unless it got changed recently, you can swim in the middle of the ocean and never drown unless you decide to go underwater.)

well, you cna take damage if you fail a swim from getting a mouthful of water.

I think if you are out of PE in a moving river you might also take some hp damage as it tries to move you. Not too sure, maybe you just dont move.

You move alright. The river sends you downstream. Swim out of the river to the shore before you are washed away and lost in the wilderness.

True, but you cannot swim without PE.

Thus you cant exit the river, when it washes you to a nwe room, it also takes PE.

Only someone with no other options should try to cross a river without sufficient PE to start with.
