IS there an equivalent to the Religous symbols? I identified one and it adds stats, I know we have spirit dolls but that has to be held in hand, shouldn't we have something for that slot, maybe not a symbol but maybe a third neck slot?

No equivalent, and I doubt they'll ever get one as multiple threads like this have arisen in the past: Spirit aura in and of itself is worth the loss of a symbol slot.

I read the spirit aura help, does it actually plague a person and curse them? Wouldn't I see something like "target gets boils or something" and target feels "unclean" ?

Spirit aura does not inflict the 'plague' or 'curse' affects.

The closest thing you'll get to shaman symbols is a certain quest in Taslamar somewhere that will, if you want, give you a totem animal to "follow".

Spirit aura is more of a pain reflection spell, it reduces damage done to the Shaman and returns a small percentage of damage back to the attacker.

A shamans spirits, as I see it, are his symbol. Though as JVJ said, you can have a totem animal to idolize if you want a little more.
