I upgraded my equipment to Krakken, and every time I log off I lose more of my equipment to thieves. I read something on these forums that implied that this was related to enchantments and equipment quality. Is this a game mechanic or just random bad luck?

Based on how much "higher" the equipment is relative to your level, you have a chance of losing it. I'm not sure what the equation is, but it scales relative to the size of the gap.

It's a "feature," designed to further infuriate people who have wasted countless time/effort and coin into getting suitable gear.

Or, to ensure that better gear is available for better (read: higher level, not necessarily greater quality) characters.

This is actually a feature that Dulrik personally implemented to spite evena.

He really hates her.

Was that to spite my GM character or the one who's not going to make it past Skybolt anyway?

Wrong. This "feature" is to remove the "You can't use this <item> yet because you are too noob" found on many other muds. You will notice, Ruxic, there is no minimum level or minimum stats (save strength for weapons) to use any weapons or armor. However instead of preventing characters from having equipment, the code is in place to prevent them from keeping it.

Read: to prevent "mules" or "storage characters" and at least force hoarders to level before they can horde items.

Oh-ho! Not so! You are de-hoarded upon logging IN, not logging OUT. Easy enough to hold onto items that you might need later on an alt that's not leveled up.

Sure, if you like running the risk of having both deleted for multi-playing.

I think a lot of vets walk a thin line with multiplay in the first place.

But, the reality is that more than hoarding items for themselves, hoarders tend to keep potentially devastating items out of others' hands. Hard to peg someone for that sort of keep-away.

Yeah, all this is pretty apparent. I almost quit bc of this, but the more I thought about it the more it looked like another IC challenge. Some times it's frustrating that every aspect of this game is challenging and requires guess work and deduction, but when you grow to expect it, it's actually fun and why I play the game in the first place.
