Melissa, You're straight up wrong. We have received spam email we didn't sign up for. We didn't ask for the daily alerts. They are spam. They continue to spam us trying to get us to log on if our factions are under attack (luckily, the pbase is so small it no longer matters). Ironically, there are players who were punished severely for this in the past (which you know).

The emails are spam. SK hurt itself in its confusion.

You have to verify your email, and the help file says what it uses it for. Spam is email that is unwanted and unsolicited. You solicit it by verifying it. You can also change your alert settings if you are getting too many.

help email
[Game help] email

Syntax: email change <email address>
Syntax: email confirm <verification code>

Upon reaching level 2, Shattered Kingdoms will send a verification code to
the email address that was entered for your character during character
creation. Once you receive the code, login to the game and use the email
confirm <code> command to confirm your email address.

If you do not receive a code via email, please check your spam folder. If
this does not help, you can re-enter your address using the email change
<address> command and a new code will be sent to you. You may also
use this command to update your verified email address at a later date.

Your email address will never be divulged to any third party. Only Level 60
Admins can view your email address. Your address will only be used by the
server to relay important info about your character, such as password resets.

A confirmed email address is required for automated password resets (coming
soon). It will also be required for various future in-game benefits.

And Also

help alerts
[Game help] alerts

Syntax: alerts <type> [game|mail] [on|off]
alerts all [game|mail] [on|off]
alerts all [on|off]

The alerts command has a variety of settings that allow you to customize
which types of real-time alerts you receive (both in-game and via email).
Your email address must be set and verified for each character that
you wish to receive related alerts. The definitions of each type are:

BONANZA (OOC)
Notification when a bonanza begins and its duration.

DIPLOMACY CHANGES (IC) (Digest)
Updates on the diplomacy status of your faction(s).

FACTION UNDER ATTACK (IC)
Notified when a player character in one of your factions(s) or an allied
faction is under attack by another player character. Also when an outer
guardian or head judge is under attack.

HAPPY HOUR (OOC)
Notification when happy hour begins each day.

LOOKING FOR PARTY (IC)
Notification from the astral conclave whenever a party leader uses the
party advertise function to look for additional members for their party
who match your character.

MENTOR OPPORTUNITIES (IC)
Notification from the astral conclave whenever a new player is created or
seeks assistance. Sent only to mentors with a preference for mentors
of the same kingdom and class.

NOTEBOARD POSTS (IC) (Digest)
Notified when a note board post is addressed specifically to your character
or one of their factions and/or religions.

Alerts that are marked (Digest) will generate no more than one individual
email per day. Subsequent alerts will be combined into a digest email to
prevent excessive email spamming. Alerts of other types may be discarded if
triggered by the same character repeatedly. Note: Purposefully triggering
alerts repeatedly to spam someone is a violation of Rule 7. (help rules2)

Alerts with the IC designation are in-character information and should not
be shared with others using out-of-game methods.

We aren't spamming anyone who hasn't given us their account information. Daily Alerts and the like stop if you stop playing. There's really nobody who would have received an email from us and been like, "Who what now?" 100% of folks who received mail from Shattered Kingdoms asked for it.

"So, like, yeah. We do this thing that you all don't like and never asked for. But we are allowed to do it so you should stop complaining about it. Also, you asked for it."

Here are people telling you that this problem exists and other people are telling you the reason that the problem exists. You don't care or you don't believe us. I guess you're happy with the situation, then. Working as intended.

Dude really? All you have to do is login type in one command log out. There no more emails. I don't see what the fuss is about.

Dude, really? All you have to do is make it an opt-in system or eliminate it since no one asked for it or wanted it and the staff have also punished people in the past for doing exactly what the alert system does.

Again, the problem has been explained but you people want to gaslight as if the problem doesn't exist. Have fun keeping the problem, then.

There are 0 ways of detecting/confirming coordinated log-ins via instant messaging apps.

Who exactly got punished again?

I don't remember their name, actually. This was around 2002-03. Taslamar was attacking Menegroth. Most of the Empire players had just logged off. Taslamar enters Menegroth to attack. YIM signal goes out and Empire players log back on. Punishments were passed out. At least one character was deleted. I think others suffered punishment. I do not recall if anyone was banned but I do not believe anyone was.

This is the most hilarious thread I have followed in years!

Auto response emails by default? Only a problem if you a) are not smart enough to turn it off in-game or b) are not smart enough to set up email rules in your email client of choice. Do read the ToS, it is a good read.

Personally, these symptoms and the timing sound like a TLS (or SSL) certificate expired and was not replaced with another, and is something I have been through with a mid-sized corporation I work with AND my own personal web server.

Apologies for the above, I'm Canadian and in IT. I am sure the SK team does what they can do with what they have, and commend them on that.
