Raise dead/breath of life cost in experience cripples the spell. Making it rarely used if at all. The fact they have a more significant cost in that you need to travel to their corpse and then they need to pay experience makes this the non preferred option even non viable option in many situations of high risk and low level caster.

Would the spell get significantly more use if a change removing the experience cost was implement. I think the answer to this is no. Resurrection would still be the go to spell for anyone who could cast it. As it is the "easy" option.

Is it possible in situations it raise dead may become over powered.

In long adventures where you lose a member would be easier to recover if you did not have a priest. However it would make such adventures more accessible, also you would still need to have beaten what ever killed the recipient. Spirit disorientation would make it so that pressing on would be harder after such an event.

Ninja raise dead well someone as looting is taking place could happen, although I dont know if this would ever really becoming a viable tactic. If it was a problem increasing the cast time would probably deal with this. Spirit disorientation would make this a less significant issue.

Now that spirit disorientation is implemented into the game double or even triple cost spirit disorientation could make raise dead/breath of life a more useable spell. This may result in a decrease in the number of priests which I am not sure is a good or a bad thing. It would limit the reliance on priest classes.

Major con do shamans or warlocks really need a buff given how they are already.

This would also make destruction of a corpse more likely to happen after PK as it would actually significantly reduce your paths back to life.

I like that idea. Have raise do x2 disorientation and BoL do x3 and have deathquest and reincarnation stay the same.

Breath of life is terrible due to the amount of exp drained. Raise dead isn't a significant amount of exp. When I play shamans, I get plenty of use of my raise spell. Rez is the ideal option, but raise isn't so painful (exp-wise) that it's shunned completely. Breath of life is, and should be. It's friggin' horribad.

Um.. whatchu talkin bout, OA? Raise dead and breath of life have the exact same experience cost and have been functionally identical for nearly a decade.

Might want to review that code then. I've seen breath of life take exp roughly equal to the max Oracle cost. Whereas Raise takes roughly one tick.

What's more:

Quote:
Death Help] Death

Death is a much more painful occurance in the Shattered Kingdoms than on some
other muds. You should read the help files recommended below for more details
about what happens when you die, the ways you can return to life and penalties
associated with each type of return. However, in regards to which methods of
return are considered the most advantageous, they are generally ranked as:

(BEST)
1. Pity of the Gods
2. Resurrection Spell
3. Raise Dead Spell
4. Breath of Life Spell
5. Oracle of the Gods
6. Reincarnation
(WORST)

Pity of the Gods is only available to Amateur status characters. They are
automatically brought back to life with no penalties until reaching Novice.

The helpfiles have been woefully neglected over the years, and I don't think that's anyone's fault in particular. When new things are rolled out, the focus is on working out kinks and gleefully watching mortals interact with the new updates. The only reason that loyalty token helpfiles got updated with the rollout was because there were three IMMs present at the time of implementation.

I actively try to update and repair helpfiles as I see discrepancies. Help death is now updated. The typo log helps me immensely, so if you notice something glaring, please log it! :)

I did check the code before I posted.

True, over a decade ago, I do believe breath of life was definitively worse than raise dead. But at this point, it only gets the lower rank due to historical reasons (and maybe because the XP benefit for the caster is more advantageous on raise dead than breath of life).
