again, no idea if it's a bug but check it out. Short bake has a knife wielded but can't be disarmed. They are fighting me, they are in the front row and are fighting with another bakemono (who doesn't have a weapon wielded) who is also in the front row and who I'm focused on. No one else in the room:

This short bakemono woman has darker skin than her male counterparts.
Although free of most of the splotchiness, her exposed skin is still
covered with tufts of thick black hair. Her skin is stretched loosely
over her boney limbs, leaving flabs of skin hanging from her arms. Her
torso is compareably overweight, as her stomach pushes out from beneath
her attire.
Her head is bleeding.
Her chest is bleeding heavily.
Overall, a short female bakemono has some big nasty wounds and scratches.

A short female bakemono is using:
<worn as skin> flesh hide (very good)
<worn on legs> a tattered and dirty pair of pants (good)
<worn on feet> a pair of worn out leather boots (fair)
<worn about waist> a plain cord made of woven cloth (very good)
<right hand> a simple bone knife with a serrated edge (fair)
<left hand> a crude black iron frying pan (brand new)

[Skills help] disarm

Syntax: disarm <victim>

The disarm skill allows a warrior to attempt to knock an opponent's weapon
out of his hands. While there is nothing stopping someone from picking
up their weapon again, the weapon's speed determines how long it will take to
resume a proper weapon stance after re-arming. It's generally impossible to
disarm unless you are wielding a weapon, although there are some groups and
creatures whose bare hands count as weapons.

There are a variety of modifiers that affect the success of a disarm attempt,
including both parties skills with the weapons involved, the accuracy of those
weapons, and relative strength and dexterity. Certain types of weapons provide
additional bonuses or penalties on a disarm check. Unparryable weapons provide
a bonus to disarm attempts while two-handed weapons provide a better defense.

The southwest corner of a large, underground cavern
The caverns come to a corner here in the southwest portion of the cave.
The space between the stalagmite to the northeast and the cavern wall
is very limiting, and bends from the north to the east very sharply. The
area here is littered with bone fragments, tools, and even woven bedrolls,
tossed about the ground haphazardly. There are quite a few lights staked
up in random locations, providing sufficient light to the area.
In the southwest corner there is erected a small campfire, still burning
with iron pots and pans scattered around it.

I'm not sure, but... does the old bakemono have "short" for a keyword too?

That might be the problem.

When he typed "l short" it showed him the short bakemono so "disarm short" should have targeted the same enemy.

Disarm targets the enemy you are currently attacking. You could "kill short" and THEN disarm her, but as it were, you were trying to disarm the old one. The target you typed doesn't matter. At least, that's how it worked when I was a swashbuckler.

What she said, you have to be in melee with the target to disarm.

Then it's the helpfile that just needs changing: if you can only target someone you are focused on (I was in melee with both, just focused on the old) then why is there even a second part to the command 'DISARM <VICTIM>'?

Disarm doesn't check for targets. It is only possible to disarm the person in direct melee combat with your pc.

On a sad note: does anybody bother to read the helpfiles these days?

Yeah, disarm has been like that for a while, the helpfile is misleading and should be changed.
