Hmm, all I could find on dictionary.com on jolly was

Quote:
Full of good humor and high spirits.
Exhibiting or occasioning happiness or mirth; cheerful: a jolly tune.
Greatly pleasing; enjoyable: had a jolly time.

Guess its my vocabulary failing (English being second language and all). Sorry about that :)

Position still stands though. :P

I dunno, jolly can look rather physical.
Here's a notable (and Classic) example:

Quote:
"His eyes how they twinkled!
His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry.

His droll little mouth
was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin
Was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe
He held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled
His head like a wreath.

He had a broad face
And a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed,
Like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump,
A right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him,
In spite of myself." -Clement C. Moore

Jolly ol' priest Frollith, lean your ear this way...
Have a Frolly Jolly holiday, it's the best time of the year... ;)

Anyway as people have said... adjs like "mysterious" that are simply an opinion, or adjs like "smiling" that state a constant state of being, etc., are the ones you should avoid the most.

You can have smiling if you're roleplaying the joker....

You can be Batman, I get Joker. Except I get to win half the time.

And I still believe this is an adjective that is more about the persona, rather than the appearance of him.  I think Mr. Moore was using ooc info on this description  :o

Jolly is not a good adjective. No matter what implications you might draw from Moore's writing, he is a master of the language's use, not its creation - and jolly just doesn't mean anything but attitude/persona/etc.

I personally have always prefered simple and basic physical adjectives, and I've never cared if the simple ones have overlapped because other people use them. So what if there's a slim deep-elf and a slim human?

Those're my two cents on the matter.

I think it's a problem when people intentionally pick adjectives to gain an advantage through pets or other members in their cabal.

edit: Pet naming is still stupid. Just have it pick a name randomly from a database.

I disagree about picking a pet name randomly from a database.

My pet has had the same name for a really long time, and it's my roleplay that it's the same one. Having its name change every time I have it restored to life... well, it doesn't happen THAT often, but it would be destructive of any sort of long term roleplay. (And yes, I surmise a few other people know my pet's name, and I don't care.)

How hard is it just to pick a name that doesn't skate on the edge of abusing the code? Seriously, I think it's up to the playerbase to step up on things like this, rather than having some artificial solution that leaves me with a pet named Bloodgut and the Adepts with pets named Chirpy and Cookie.

(Note: I'm not suggesting these names for pets. Though they are elite.)

You think someone would have a better way to get his jollies off.
