Hi there,

I SK just last night, after a sudden urge to try my hand at playing at MUD. The only other experience in playing MUDs was many many years ago, when I played Achaea for a few weeks. (My knowledge of these text based games is somewhat proficient, I can move around, fight, etc.) However, I've been playing for a few hours and spending a lot of time going through the help files, but the more I do the more I get confused. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Is there someone out there who will let me unload a pile of questions on, especially very basic advice such as where to go, what to do first, etc.? For example, how do I improve certain attributes? How do I learn to use different weapon? What weapon should I be using? And much more. I know that answers to these questions are probably in the help files somewhere, but it's been a pain to look through them one by one, especially since I'm just looking for answers to very very basic starting questions.

I've also never tried role-playing before, so this will be a first. Forgive me if I'm not very good at it. :(

Thanks.

I'm rather new myself but am somewhat proficient with the basics. You can PM or IM me just about anywhere with this screen-name.

Have you tried the mentor command? Walk into the newbie training area or one of the inns and type 'mentor' and hopefully someone who wants to help will respond. You can also take a look at the who list: Generally, people who put 'instructor,' 'teacher,' or something similar in their titles are looking to help.

How about we go about this in a different fashion?

"How do I learn to use different weapon?"
This makes me think you haven't tried to "train" at an NPC. You can learn from them, at a cost. Or you can use the mentor command in a starter zone or an inn in one of the six major cities. There are many things to learn. To see, type "skill".

"what should i be using?"
Depends, but at low levels, a 2-handed weapon will do more damage, getting you more xp. Later on, you may want to switch to something 1-handed and use a shield. More on that in the newbie forums.

"how do I improve certain attributes?"
You may have found NPCs that you can "train" at, and if you have, try "train stat" and see what happens. Certain NPCs train certain attributes. You have the 6 main attributes, STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA. The maxes of these are based on your race. The others are ART, MANA, HP, and MOVE. The maxes of these are based on your class. As far as how to train your attributes, there are many threads around with how to build your character.

Ask questions, someone will get to you.

Welcome indeed. And don't be afraid to shoot your questions away, via PMs or not. You should not feel uncomfortable to go ahead and ask your things in public. The playerbase may seem a little silly in "General Discussion" forums, but that's just us teasing each other, knowing each other through years of playing together. Other than that, I don't know a single player who will ever scoff at you for even the "silliest" newbie question.

So yeah, all in all, welcome, and shoot your questions away :)

Thanks for all the encouraging and nice words! Another simple question that I can't seem to find the answer to on the help files:

How do you see how much experience you have to spend? (I know worth will show you how far you are to the next level, but it doesn't show you how much experience you have.) Similarly, how do you know what level you are?

Thanks again!

Numerics have been removed from the game as a whole since they take a bit away from the feeling of RP that the implementor is trying to achieve. Instead you get a set of "ticks" or "notches" as people usually refer to them to lead you from one level to the next, those are more or less increments towards the next level, their order is as follows:

You have just began your journey to the next level.
You still have a long way to go until the next level.
You are one-third of the way to the next level.
You are very close to half-way to the next level.
You are at the half-way point to the next level.
You have began the second-half of the way to the next level.
You are two-thirds of the way to the next level.
You are over three-fourths of the way to the next level.
You are almost eligible for a level advancement.
You may advance to the next level.

As for levels, they are similarly split, help status will give you the names of each bracket, you advance from one to the next every five levels, with the exception of the last status which only needs 4 levels after you hit Champion, so effectively 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31, 36, 41, 46 and 50. When you do score you will notice Status then followed by the description of your bracket with a number in the parenthesis so Master (1) is 41, Master (2) is 42 etc.

PS: The xp ticks descriptions are off the top of my head and I could have made a mistake, don't shoot me.
PS2: Welcome to the meat grinder, enjoy :P

Thanks! But how do we know how much experience we have to spend on training? It seems that every time I approach an NPC trainer, he always says to go get more experience.

The XP to level up is the same XP that you spend on skills. Train up to 1/2 a level then train some skills and then hit worth.

Also make sure you're training skills appropriate to your level else they use stupid amounts of XP which may give the same message.

{Edit} Use spells or skills to see what's listed against Novice for example.
