When you train skills you are actually expending xp gained for the next level, in that sense its a really bad idea to train something of a higher bracket because it will consume absurd amounts of xp like Tumrall pointed out. You will notice your level progress going down when you train skills, hence why the trainers will yell about going back, you've actually used up all your xp in that level when that happens.

Okay, I've been kicked out of the starting are for being too high level. Now that I'm in the city, I wonder is it acceptable to kill civilians out on the street, or is that considered a crime?

On one hand, you will be reported by any NPCs you might not be fighting at the time, on the other hand the civilians are not all very low level and you might get your [REDACTED] handed to you, its a good idea to use the mentor command and then contact anyone that might respond to you and ask for directions in character about where to go to continue your travels.

Thank you once again! Another very newbie problem I have run into, how do I learn someone's name? When I "greet" someone, nothing happens besides me greeting them. Of course, I figured could ask them for their name IC, but it wouldn't be recorded in the actual game. How does this work?

They have to greet you back, then you will no longer see them by adjective but by name, and you will see their race on the who list. The amount of people you can remember the names of depends on your intelligence score.

Also, figure out a way IC for people to get you attribute mods, or stat mods. They are incredibly useful in game! Welcome! I remember being a newbie, it can be rough.

It's been going pretty well these past few days. Something unrelated to game play, but I've been using zMUD, and I've noticed that the colors on words are often off. (For example, language colors, or randomly colored letters.) Is this normal?

Perhaps you have de-activated the ANSI color on the game. You do that by typing "color" it will turn ANSI color on and off.

Actually, this is an issue I have with zMud as well. The issue is that the pallate is slightly off for whatever reason. I'm guessing when you log on, everything is somewhat tinged with green - right? In fact, the initial logon screen is supposed to be grey on black. If I recall correctly (and it's been a number of years since I had to do this), if you go into zMud preferences and change those tones to match, everything else should follow.

If you want more specifics - I'd suggest logging on via telnet and then setting your zMUD colors to match what you see there, that's how the game is intended to look.

What color scheme are you using? If I recall correctly, zMUD uses VT100 as the default settting which also happens to have black as the background and green for default text.

Unless you plan on remapping colors, set zMUD to use the ANSI scheme.

View -> Preferences -> Color - Scheme -> ANSI
